Batman Forever is a 1995 American superhero film directed by Joel Schumacher and produced by Tim Burton, based on the DC Comics Batman character. This is the third installment of the early Batman movie series, with Val Kilmer replacing Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Chris O'Donnell, Nicole Kidman, Tommy Lee Jones, and Jim Carrey. The plot focuses on Batman trying to stop Two-Face (Jones) and Riddler (Carrey) in their evil scheme to extract confidential information from all thoughts in Gotham City and use it to learn the identity of Batman and bring the city under their control. She gained loyalty from love interest - psychiatrist Dr. Chase Meridian (Kidman) and an orphaned youth circus actress named Dick Grayson (O'Donnell), who became his best friend Robin.

Batman Forever's tone is significantly different from the previous installment, becoming more family-friendly since Warner Bros. believes that Batman's previous film Batman Batman Returns (1992), failed to surpass its predecessors due to parental complaints about film violence and dark tone. Schumacher away from the dark, dystopian atmosphere of the Burton movies by drawing inspiration from Batman's comic book from the era of Dick Sprang, as well as the television series of the 1960s. Keaton chose not to repeat the role for failing to negotiate with studio executives Terry Semel and Bob Daly about the overall approach to the script. William Baldwin and Ethan Hawke were originally considered for Keaton's replacement before Kilmer joined the cast. Rene Russo was originally set to play Chase Meridian, based on chemistry with Keaton on One Good Cop, but was replaced with a much younger Nicole Kidman after being considered "too old" for Kilmer.

The film was released on June 16, 1995, receiving mixed reviews, but was financially successful. Batman Forever grossed over $ 336 million worldwide and became the sixth best-selling film worldwide in 1995.

Production

Development

Batman Returns was released in 1992 with financial success and generally favorable reviews from critics, but Warner Bros. was disappointed with the box office run, which made $ 150 million less than the first film. The director Tim Burton was asked to limit himself to the role of the producer, with the approval of Joel Schumacher as the director and the couple Lee and Janet Scott-Batchler, who agreed with him that "a key element for Batman is his duality and not just that Batman is Bruce Wayne". Their original script introduced a psychotic Riddler with a pet rat who accompanied him. The elements of the story and much of the dialogue still remain in the finished film, though Schumacher feels it can be "lighte [ne] d down". Schumacher claims he originally had in mind the adaptation of Frank Miller Batman: Year One . Warner Bros rejected the idea because they wanted a sequel, not a prequel, even though Schumacher was able to incorporate a very brief episode of Bruce Wayne's childhood with some comic events The Dark Knight Returns . Akiva Goldsman, who worked with Schumacher on Client , was brought in to rewrite the script. Burton, who is more interested in directing Ed Wood, reflects his surprise by some focus group meetings for Batman Forever, the title he hates. Producer Peter MacGregor-Scott represents the studio's goal in making the film for MTV Generation with full-fledged appeal.

Production continues the fast track with Rene Russo as Dr. Chase Meridian but Michael Keaton decides not to underestimate Batman because he does not like the new direction the series leads. Keaton also wanted to pursue a "more interesting role", rejecting $ 15 million. The decision was made to go with the younger actor for Bruce Wayne, and an offer was made to Ethan Hawke, who turned him down. Schumacher has seen Val Kilmer at Tombstone , but is also interested in Daniel Day-Lewis, Ralph Fiennes, William Baldwin and Johnny Depp. Kilmer signed without reading the script or knowing who the new director was.

With Kilmer casting, Warner Bros. dropped Rene Russo as Chase Meridian. Robin Wright, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Linda Hamilton all considered for the role, which was eventually rebuilt with Nicole Kidman. Billy Dee Williams took Harvey Dent's role at Batman on the possibility of painting Two-Face in a sequel, but Schumacher included Tommy Lee Jones in the role, after working with him at the Client . Jones refused to accept the role, but did so after the insistence of his son. Robin Williams is in discussion to become Riddler at one point. In an interview in 2003, Schumacher said Michael Jackson lobbied loudly for the role, but was denied before Jim Carrey was thrown. Robin appears in firing scripts Batman Returns but has been deleted due to too many characters. Marlon Wayans has played the role, and signed for a potential sequel. It was decided to replace Wayans with a white actor. Leonardo DiCaprio is considered, but decided not to pursue the role after meeting with Schumacher. Chris O'Donnell is a player and Mitchell Gaylord serves as a substitute cast. Schumacher strives to create a cameo role for Bono as MacPhisto's character, but both agree that it is not suitable for the film.

Filming

Filming started in September 1994. Schumacher hired Barbara Ling for production design, claiming that the film needed "strength" and a good design. Ling can "move on". Schumacher wanted a design that was not connected to the previous film, and instead was inspired by images from the Batman comic book seen in the 1940s/early 1950s and was taken from it. architecture of New York City in the 1930s, with a combination of modern Tokyo. He also wanted a "city with personality", with more statues, as well as various neon counts.

Schumacher had a filming problem with Kilmer, whom he described as "childish and impossible", reported that he was fighting with various crew, and refused to speak to Schumacher for two weeks after the director told him to stop acting rudely. Schumacher also mentioned Tommy Lee Jones as the source of the problem: "Jim Carrey is a gentleman, and Tommy Lee is threatened by him, I am tired of defending overprivileged actors, I pray that I will not work with them again." Carrey then admits that Jones is unfriendly to him, telling him that he once failed during production, "I hate you, I really do not like you... I can not refute your cruelty."

Design and effects

Rick Baker designed the prosthetic makeup. John Dykstra, Andrew Adamson, and Jim Rygiel serve as visual effects watchers, with Pacific Data Images also contributing to the visual effects. PDI provides Batman-generated computers for complex actions. For costume design, producer Peter MacGregor-Scott claims that 146 workers at one point work together. The Batman costume was redesigned along the lines of a more "organic MTV, and edgier feel" for the lawsuit. Sound editing and mixing is supervised by Bruce Stambler and John Levesque, including a trip to the cave to record the sound of bats. The new Batmobile is designed for Batman Forever, with two cars under construction, one for action and one for close-up. Surrealist painter from Switzerland, H.R. Giger gave his version to the Batmobile but was considered too evil for the film.

Music

Elliot Goldenthal was hired by Schumacher to compile a movie score before the script was written. In discussions with Schumacher, the director wanted Goldenthal to avoid taking inspiration from Danny Elfman, and asked for an original composition. The movie teaser promotional trailer uses the main title theme of Elfman's 1989's Batman score.

The soundtrack was commercially successful, selling almost as much coffee as Prince's soundtrack to the 1989 Batman movie. Only five songs on the soundtrack are actually featured in the movie. The hit singles from the soundtrack include "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" by U2 and "Kiss from a Rose" by Seal, both nominated for MTV Movie Awards. "Kiss from a Rose" (whose video was also directed by Joel Schumacher) reached No. 1. 1 on the US charts as well. The soundtrack itself, featuring additional songs by The Flaming Lips, Brandy (both songs also included in the movie), Method Man, Nick Cave, Michael Hutchence (from INXS), PJ Harvey, and Massive Attack, is an effort for (in the producer). Peter MacGregor-Scott's words make the film more "pop".
