Histori

Paperchase was founded by two art students, Judith Cash and Eddie Pond, circa 1968. The company went through various owners before receiving an investment from W H Smith in 1985; it continued to grow and in 1996 became Paperchase Products Ltd., which has been purchased by existing management with investment from venture capital funds.

In 2004 Borders Group Inc. bought Graphite Capital, and the company grew internationally within the Borders network.

In 2007 Borders sold a majority stake in the UK and the Irish Borderbook bookstore to Risk Capital for Ã, Â £ 10 million.

In May 2008, the Borders Group announced that it was considering selling its 97% stake to one of HgCapital, Isis Equity Partners or Change Capital, with WH Smith interested in entering a £ 50m bid - 12 years after selling it in Ã, Â £ 1 million.

With the administration and closure of Borders (UK) at the end of 2009, the company lost a large presence on the UK highway as there was a Paperchase concession in every UK Boundary. The British Border Division was separated from its parent and owner of Paperchase in 2007, and all Borders stores were closed on December 22, 2009. To replace this lost British retail site, the Paperchase concession was established at HMV and Waterstones stores during 2010.

In 2010, management purchases have been completed and the company is currently owned by the Main Capital and the board of directors.

Controversy

In February 2010, the company was accused of stealing works of art created by independent British artist Hidden Eloise. An artist working for the agency Gather No Moss has finally admitted tracing the artwork.

In November 2017, the company issued an apology for running an ad for free wrapping paper in Daily Mail on Saturday 18 November, following a campaign by the Stop Funding Hate group. Journalists Julia Hartley-Brewer and Piers Morgan condemned the decision. The Daily Mail responded by stating "it is very worrying that Paperchase should allow itself to be oppressed to apologize - behind dubious Facebook comments and 150 direct tweets - to an internet troll set up by a small group of Corbynist left individuals who try to suppress legitimate debate and impose their views on the media... Do companies consider what messages they send to the four million people who read Daily Mail on Saturday, many of them will be their customers? "
