virtual number , also known as a direct incoming call (DID) or access number, is a phone number with no directly related phone line. Usually these numbers are programmed to forward incoming calls to any pre-defined phone number chosen by the client: fixed, mobile or VoIP. Virtual numbers can function like a gateway between traditional calls (PSTN) and VOIP.
Customers to a virtual number can use their existing phones, without the need to purchase additional hardware, that is, use a lot of available software.
A virtual private number is the phone number that forwards the incoming call to the pre-defined phone number. This is also called a follow-me number, virtual phone number or (in the UK) Personal Number.
Normally a virtual phone number can be set to forward calls to different phone numbers depending on the time of day and day of the week using day routing time; for example, between 9 and 5 on the day of the incoming call will be forwarded to someone's workplace, but on weekends to someone's phone.
Availability (and acceptable usage) virtual phone numbers are subject to regulatory situations in the country issuing them.

Apps and sample usage
- Business - A company located in China can have a phone number in Los Angeles or London without paying for a fixed foreign exchange channel. Virtual numbers are very popular among call centers that appear to be in one country, while they are in one or more countries in different time zones, providing an efficient 24/7 coverage.
- Individual - Other popular users of international virtual numbers are migrants and travelers, who appreciate that their friends and family at home can contact them using local calls.
- Specific business - Calling card or callback. The virtual number functions like an access number, for example, a phone number (calling card) or callback user must rotate to make a call/(use callback).
- Marketing - Some companies use virtual numbers for different marketing campaigns, or different media channels; this lets them track which campaigns or media are generating what traffic.
- Virtual services - Virtual business service providers (virtual addresses, virtual receptionists, virtual offices) will use virtual numbers to bind in other virtual services together into one seamless solution. It enables their customers to have mobile phone, address, and voice presence almost anywhere in the world.
Most voice over IP service providers offer virtual numbers; provider that is not labeled this label as "DID" (direct dial in). These are typically offered as local geographic numbers in selected cities or as toll-free numbers, with non-geographic numbers bringing higher per-minute charges for receiving calls.
In North American Numbering Plan, Area code 500 and Area Code 533 are follow-me numbers, and are referred to as Personal Communications Services (NANP).
In the UK, this is offered under the non-geographic 070 prefix, referred to as the Private Numbering Service (PNS).
