History

Part of the first national park gained the status of a protected area as 'flora and fauna reserve' declared on October 16, 1919 under the Fauna and Flora Reserve Act 1919, an action whose special purpose is:

... to establish a Reserve on Kangaroo Island for the Protection, Conservation and Propagation of Fauna and Flora Australasia, and to provide such Reserve Control, and for other purposes.

Formed as a national park on the proclamation of the 1972 Wilderness and Wildlife Act of 1972 which strips five items from existing legislation including the Fauna and Flora Reserve Act 1919 . At the proclamation in 1972, it consisted of the following soil in the following cadastre units as well as the whole of Casuarina Islets - section 11 in Hundred of Borda, section 64 in Hundred of Gosse, section 17 on Hundreds of McDonalds and section 66 on "South out of Hundreds".

Sanctuary

Since its creation in November 1919, it has been a sanctuary for endangered species, some of them introduced from the mainland in the 1920s and 1930s. During the 1940s, 23 additional species were introduced, including Koalas (1923) and Platypus (1928). Most of these species can still be observed today. Kangaroos, Goannas and Echidnas are usually seen in national parks.

Small penguin

Little penguins have been recorded in Flinders Chase in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. It is believed that these colonies have become extinct, in part due to the increasing populations of New Zealand seals since the end of commercial sealing. In 1886, a small penguin was seen in the Admiral's Arch.

Geological monuments

This national park has two geological features that have been listed as a geological monument by the Australian Geological Society - Cape du Couedic and Remarkable Rocks.

Extraordinary Rock is a natural sculpted formation that is precariously balanced over the granite outcrop. They remind visitors about the statues of Henry Moore.
