Events

On the morning of January 31, 1984, Atahan successfully robbed two or three banks before entering Commonwealth Bank in George Street, Sydney. Due to previous robberies, the police were on high alert and promptly responded to the Commonwealth Bank robbery with dozens of fully armed tactical police from Tactical Response Group (TRG) and Special Weapons & amp; Operating Section (SWOS), forming the perimeter. During the negotiations, Atahan fired at least two shots from the gun and freed all bank customers. Some time later, Atatan freed four female bank staff while holding five male staff as hostages.

About two and a half hours later, Atahan ended the negotiations and emerged from a bank surrounded by five hostages, each forced to lay a hand on the head of a robber. This tactic caused confusion and prevented the police snipers from obtaining a clear view and thereby robbing their chance to shoot him. Atahan forced five hostages into the nearest Datsun sedan whose key was left in it. He then forced the hostages to pass the police blockade, which began a chase lasting several hours and involving 39 police cars, police helicopters, and four Water Police was launched. After two hours of driving, Atahan releases a hostage and collects girlfriend Sharon Oliver, 23 years old.

After reaching the Saliva Bridge, the police raised the bridge, preventing Atahan from traveling further. Detectives from Special Weapons & amp; The Operation (SWOS) section approached the vehicle, ordering Atahan to surrender. Atahan fired his.32 ACP gun at close range on Detective Senior Constable Steve Canelis, hitting him just above his nose. Senior Constable detective Donald Packer fired a shot at Atahan through a side window while Detective Sergent John Nagle shot the round through the rear window. Atahan is struck on his head and chest and dies.
