History

The 270 Park Avenue address was previously occupied by 12-storey, rocky Renaissance Revival Hotel Marguery built in 1917. At some point around the 1930s, Nikola Tesla pulled out a room at the Marguery Hotel. The tenants of Marguery Hotel hired New York prosecutor Peter McCoy in 1947 as their lawyer. McCoy had previously sued stockbrokers for the government before entering private practice.

Gordon Bunshaft and Natalie de Blois designed skyscrapers for Skidmore, Owings & amp; Merrill for an address, completed in 1961. It served as headquarters for Union Carbide until the company moved to Danbury, Connecticut in 1983. It was later occupied by Hanover Trust and Chemical Bank Manufacturers. Currently the world headquarters for JPMorgan Chase. The building is 707 feet (215 m) tall and has 52 floors. In 2012, it was announced that 270 Park has achieved Plated LEED status following what was then the biggest renovation in history.

Reestablishment plan

In 2018, JPMorgan announced they would destroy the current building on the site to make way for new buildings that would be 500 feet (150 m) taller than the existing building. Demolition is expected to begin in early 2019, and the new building will be completed by 2024. The 70-floor replacement headquarters will be able to accommodate 15,000 employees, while the building currently fits 6,000 employees in a space of 3,500 capacity. The new headquarters are part of East Midtown's rezoning plan.
