Proof of purchase is often required for sales promotions and producer rebates as proof that customers purchase the product. When multiple purchases are required to redeem this gift, this is referred to as a premium incentive or collector mechanics .
Proof of traditional purchasing system requires the consumer to send some parts of the packaging, as defined by the product manufacturer, or sales invoice.
Unique code printed on the packaging is increasingly used as a mechanism for proof of purchase. Consumers can send the code electronically to validate the central database, thereby establishing proof of purchase. Such systems enable manufacturers to develop direct relationships with consumers, to be used in short-term sales promotions, loyalty systems and consumer data collection and profile.
Stores receiving refunds may require proof of purchase, often in the form of a receipt.
Some large retailers may receive a reference number, usually allocated to invoices and confirmation emails as proof of purchase.
