MileagePlus is a United Airlines and Aeromar loyalty program that offers prizes to passengers traveling with certain types of tickets. Following the 2011 merger agreement between United Airlines and Continental Airlines, United Mileage Plus was chosen to be a frequent flyer program for joint airlines. The program was later renamed MileagePlus, and maintained its relationship with Star Alliance partners, as well as other airline and travel arrangements.

After integration and phase out of Continental OnePass on March 3, 2012, MileagePlus is also a frequent flyer program for Copa Airlines and Copa Airlines Colombia. The new program member ID follows the OnePass (2 letter 6 digit) format instead of the old Mileage Plus (11 digit) format, and each member with the existing OnePass member ID number retains the existing number. In March 2015, Copa Airlines announced that it would stop the MileagePlus program that supports a new frequent flyer program called ConnectMiles.

Histori

The frequent flier program was introduced in 1979 by Texas International Airlines. Two years later, American Airlines launched their AAdvantage program, and United's Mileage Plus was launched a week later. On June 29, 2011, United Airlines officially changed the name of the program from Mileage Plus to MileagePlus.

On July 9, 2011, Tom Stuker became the first member of the MileagePlus program to reach ten million miles flying at United. He gets this distinction flying from Los Angeles to Chicago on a 942 flight. Jeff Smisek, then president and CEO of United Airlines, is ready to congratulate him. To reach the number ten million miles, he was given the only United Titanium Card and his name was placed on the side of United Boeing 747-400. Stuker has crossed the threshold of 18 million miles and remains the most frequent flyer in the world.

Some controversial changes were introduced to the program in 2012, after the integration of Continental OnePass program into MileagePlus. This includes reduction of bonus miles for Premier Gold and Premier Platinum members, as well as the inability of Premier Silver members to book Economy Plus seats up to 24 hours prior to departure. Changes have also occurred in the upgrade process, where upgrades are sold at check-in for as low as $ 69, even when the elite is still being processed on the update waiting list. Million Mile Flyer George Lagen filed, in late May 2012, a class act against United to take or demote "lifetime" benefits promised for pre-merger Million Mile Flyers. A federal judge eventually dismissed a class action suit on the grounds that the contract governing the "Million Mile Flyer" customer is the same as for all members of MileagePlus, which essentially gives the airline the right to unilaterally reduce or discontinue benefits whenever they wish.

Partner airline

In addition to United Airlines, all 28 Star Alliance members and a number of other airlines participated in the MileagePlus program to some extent. MileagePlus miles can then be obtained and redeemed on flights with United, as well as any partner airlines. However, certain booking classes in partner airlines are exempt from mileage accruals.

Travel award

MileagePlus miles (redeemable) may be redeemed for travel by a combination of United Airlines and United Express carrier, as well as Star Alliance partners and other airline partners. MileagePlus offers Saver and Everyday awards, at various price levels with different capacity control mechanisms. The Saver award is a controlled rewards capacity available for travel on all partner airlines.

The launch of the saver award seats dictated by the airline, which will make award inventory available to all its partners, including United MileagePlus. On flights operated by United Airlines, additional award-winning inventory inventory is offered to Premier members, other than those offered to public members.

The daily awards are only available for travel on United and United Express, and have greater availability than saver awards. The "Everyday" award is worth two to three times that of the equivalent "Saver" award.

The redeemed miles do not expire, provided there is account activity in the previous 18 months.

The MileagePlus award is one-way and does not require a round trip.
