Arthur Ashe Stadium is a tennis stadium located in the Queens district of New York City. As part of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, it is the main stadium of the US Open tennis tournament, the fourth and last Grand Slam tennis tournament of the calendar year - and is the world's largest (by capacity) tennis stadium, with a capacity of 23,771.

Located within Flushing Meadows-Corona Park - a reclamation site that had previously served as a world fair site, before dumping Manhattan's coal ash and before it was a natural wetland - the original stadium's design did not include the roof. After experiencing several years of event delays from bad weather, the lightweight, newly retractable roof was completed in 2016.

The stadium is named after Arthur Ashe, the winner of the US Open in 1968, the first in which professionals can compete.

Histori

Opened 21 years ago in 1997, the facility replaced Louis Armstrong Stadium as the premier venue for the tournament. It costs $ 254 million to build, and features 22,547 individual seats, 90 luxury suites, five restaurants, and a two-level lounge, making it the world's largest tennis venue. Like the other 32 courts in the facility, it has a DecoTurf acrylic soft surface. Located near Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, two Mets-Willets Point sharing facilities stop at the New York City Subway IRT Flushing Line ( 7 and & lt; 7 & gt; railway) and Port Washington Branch of Long Island Railroad.

On August 25, 1997, the stadium opened, hosting the US Open, with Whitney Houston singing One Moment in Time during the stadium-inauguration ceremony and dedicating performance to Ashe and the new stadium.

It hosted the regular first regular WNBA game of the year in 2008; Indiana Fever beat host New York Liberty 71-55 on July 19. This game serves as a fundraising event for breast cancer research.

The facility features a Hawk-Eye electronic system that allows tennis players to challenge the referee's decision on calls made throughout the championship. In 2005, the color scheme for the court was changed from the green to the blue court inner court and the outer court was bright green. All US Open Series events now use this color scheme, giving viewers a more easily trackable football - with yellow tennis balls in contrast more visible to the blue court.

The retractable roof

Lack of roof, relatively strong and unpredictable winds can occur inside stadiums, events prone to severe weather - and five years in a row of rain delays occurred during the US Open men's singles final from 2008 to 2012.

Although the original design requirement is less for the roof, the USTA announced in 2013 plans to build a roof for the stadium using a 5,000-short-ton (4,536-ton) superstructure - after consulting "with every architect involved in the design of a stadium roof in North America."

In particular, Ashe's central site displays poor soil conditions. This was previously Manhattan's Corona Ash Dumps (shown prominently in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby as the Ashes Valley) and was previously a natural wetland swamp. For a new roof, a very lightweight solution is essential.

The roof has two 800-ton cloth panels made of 210,000 square feet (20,000 m 2 ) a light PTFE membrane that can open or close on the slide, up to 25 feet per minute, to create an opening approximately the size 17 Olympic swimming pools. The stadium is not fully conditioned; a new cold water venting system controls moisture when the roof is closed. The new cantilevered design is supported by eight columns sitting on a concrete base, each supported by 20 stacks driven 150 to 200 feet deep and having data acquisition and recording systems along with a synchronized camera to interpret data created by complex control systems. The roof, which costs $ 150 million, is part of a $ 550 million renovation from the National Tennis Center. Roof project that can be opened completed in 2016.

The roof was designed by Rossetti Architects and its structure designed by WSP Global. Geiger Engineers performs the initial design of the roof mechanization system. Hardesty & amp; Hanover is Recording Engineer for mechanization system and doing final design.
