Careers

Chase Band was created in 1970 by Bill Chase, Ted Piercefield, Alan Ware, and Jerry Van Blair, all veteran jazz trumpets who are also proficient in vocals and set up. They are supported by a rhythm section consisting of Phil Porter on keyboards, Angel South (born Lucian Gondron) on guitar, Dennis Johnson on bass, and Jay Burrid (born John Mitthauer) on percussion. Rounding the group was Terry Richards, who featured as the lead vocalist on the first album. In April 1971, the band released their debut album, Chase , which contained Chase's most famous song, "Get It On", released as a single that spent 13 weeks on Hot 100 Billboard in early May 1971. This feature features what Jim Szantor calls from Downbeat magazine entitled "the distinctive features of Chase brass - complex cascade lines, precise waterfall of timbre trumpet and technique". The band received a nomination for Best New Artist Grammy Award, but was released by Carly Simon. 1971 proved to be the most fruitful band with television shows on the Tonight Show and Tommy Smother's Organic Prime Time Space Ride . WBBM Chicago aired a 1/2 hour special broadcast featuring the group but only aired around the Chicago area. Appearances at the Kansas City Jazz and Newport Jazz Festival increased the band's popularity.

Chase released their second album, Ennea , in March 1972; the album title is the Greek word for nine, a reference to the nine band members. The original line-up changed in the middle of the recording session, with Gary Smith taking over the drums and G. G. Shinn replacing Terry Richards on the lead vocals. Although Chase's first album sold nearly 400,000 copies, Ennea was not well received by the public. As Bill Chase said in a Downbeat interview, "I do not want people to be very conscious about the trumpet part, they should only hear good things, but do not get stuck on their heads with brass." The single, "So Many People", received some radio playback. After an extended hiatus, Chase reappeared in early 1974 with the release of Pure Music , their third album. Featuring a new line-up, but maintaining a four-trumpet section led by Bill Chase, the group moves farther away from the idiom rock, and becomes more focused on jazz. The magazine's Variety is called Pure Music "probably Chase's most commercial endeavor, and their jazz brand can have a commercial impact." Several songs were written by Jim Peterik of Ides of March, who also sang two songs on the album, supporting singer and bassist Dartanyan Brown.
