Histori
Wawa's business started in 1803 as an iron foundry. In 1890, George Wood, a businessman from New Jersey, moved to Delaware County, Pennsylvania; here he started Wawa Dairy Farm. Timber imports cattle from the British island of dependency in Guernsey, and buys 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land in the Chester Heights area; corporate headquarters will later be renamed Wawa. Because pasteurization is not yet available, many children face the disease because they consume raw milk. Wood is set up for doctors to certify that the milk is sanitary and safe for consumption, which convinces many consumers to purchase the product. The strategy worked, and enabled Wawa's milk to grow. Demand for dairy products grew rapidly during the 1920s, and so did the company. Wawa started using the slogan, "Buy Bottled Health," and served customers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, delivering milk to customers' homes.
However, in the 1960s, consumers began buying milk at stores instead of using home delivery. Wawa began to open his own shop to adjust to this market change. On April 16, 1964, Grahame Wood opened the first Wawa Food Market at 1212 MacDade Boulevard in Folsom, Pennsylvania, which remained in operation until June 17, 2016 when it was closed to support the new "Super Wawa" on the road. A parade was held from the original location to the new store on the opening day.
Wawa Food Market stores are also part of retail trends, supermarkets. Open supermarkets earlier and newer than traditional supermarkets, they bring food and drinks other than milk, as well as other items from Wawa milk.
In 1977, Wawa began to share ownership of the company with its partners through a profit-sharing plan. In 1992, Wawa formalized its partner ownership with an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), with shares granted to employees each year based on the previous year's services. Since the company is privately owned, Wawa secures independent assessments of the value of his shares on a regular basis to ensure that the ESOP is well maintained. Today, ESOP accounts for more than 40% of Wawa shares.
In 1989, Wawa Inc. and the Wood family together controlled about 725 hectares of land, containing the company headquarters, Wawa dairy farm, and J.T. Ranch, in two municipalities in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The property is located in Chester Heights and Middletown Township. Wawa Inc. has 50 hectares of land around the "Red Roof," the company's headquarters, 150 hectares of land around the Wawa farm, and 225-acre J.T. Farms. The Wood family also has 300 acres of property. His vast landholdings have led to criticism by some, including a journalist who calls them "the closest thing to the feudal line on this side of duPont."

Name and logo
The chain name comes from the location of the company's first dairy factory and corporate headquarters in Wawa, Pennsylvania. The city name Wawa in turn comes from the word Ojibwe for a Canadian goose (taken from The Song of Hiawatha ). The image of an in-flight goose serves as Wawa's company logo. It is said that swans are chosen because the company uses the principles of teamwork, group consensus, and encouragement.
Leadership
Wawa's current CEO is Chris Gheysens, who replaced Howard Stoeckel in January 2013. Eleutḫ'̬re (Tḫ'̬re) du Pont has served as CFO and president, but is no longer in touch with the company. Richard D. (Dick) Wood, Jr. is chairman of the board of directors. In July 2009, many members of the Wood family were still active inside the company. Although Wawa is a family-run business, the Wawa association has about 50% of the company, more than 40% of which are owned through the company's ESOP.

Wawa Inc. has 50 hectares (20 acres) of land around the "Red Roof," corporate headquarters, 150 acres (61Ã, ha) of land around Wawa farms, and 225 hectares (91Ã, ha) J.T. Farms. The Wood family owns 300 acres (120 hectares) of estate property. Cynthia Mayer of Philadelphia Inquirer says that, as a result of land ownership, the Wood family is "the closest thing to the feudal ramp on the du Pont side."
Beginning in the 1940s, dairies began selling more than one package of land. In 1964, it sold about 40 acres to Franklin Mint. A few years before 1989, the company sold 25 hectares of land to a pension complex, Granite Farms Estates. The process of excess land sales continues sporadically.
Wawa Inc. has a 225-acre J.T. Ranch, separate farm property. In 1989 Wawa Inc. lease it to Bill Faul, who keeps a herd of 100 Holstein cows and pays $ 1,500 (currently $ 2778.12) per month. Wawa retains farmland for symbolic reasons. It also maintains a female cow along Route 1 on a plot adjacent to a non-dairy crop; Fritz Schroeder, vice president of Wawa Inc., said in 1989, "[w] e liked them for the atmosphere."
Wawa, for the most part, includes parts of Pennsylvania that have not been served by fast-growing competitor stores, Sheetz and Kroger-owned Turkish Hill. Wawa is often compared to Sheetz because of their similar business model and Pennsylvania roots.
Corporate headquarters
The company's headquarters is located in the Wawa area, along Baltimore Pike in Chester Heights. Headquarters are near Middletown Township. In 2011 about 300 employees worked at the headquarters. Borough of Chester Heights receives most of the local service tax from Wawa employees.

Storage location
Wawa operates stores in Delaware, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The Wawa area once stretched to New York and Connecticut, but in the late 1990s, a decision was made to leave franchised stores in the New York and New England metropolitan areas, because it was too competitive. The abandoned stores were re-branded when they were sold to Krauszer (in Connecticut) and other convenience retailers, but most were still recognizable because they maintained their distinctive "Wawa" design. The company continued to operate many stores in Central Jersey and South Jersey, and re-entered North Jersey in 2010, when Wawa opened a new store in Parsippany. Wawa opened the 100th Wawa Super in New Jersey on October 12, 2012 at Woodbridge. Wawa moves further to the opening of North Jersey at Kearny on January 11, 2013 and Lodi on October 4, 2013. The company plans to open five Wawas a year in North Jersey for the next 10 to 12 years.
On July 18, 2012, Wawa entered the Florida market when it opened its first location in Orlando. It has been expanded to over seventy locations by the end of 2015, with plans for more 120 by 2022.
