The Magnificent Mile , sometimes referred to as The Mag Mile , is the upscale section of Chicago Michigan Avenue, running from the Chicago River to Oak Street on the Near North Side. The district is located adjacent to the city center, and one block east of Rush Street. Magnificent Mile serves as the main road between the Chicago Loop business district and the Gold Coast. In general the western boundary is the neighborhood of Streeterville, to the east and the North River to the west.
Real estate developer, Arthur Rubloff from Rubloff Company, nicknamed it in the 1940s. Today Chicago's largest shopping district, middle and high-end shops lined up along this section of the road; about 3,100,000 square feet (290,000 m 2 ) is occupied by retail, restaurants, museums and hotels.
