111 Westminster Street (formerly Bank of America Building , officially known as Building Bank National Industrial , and is often referred to as Superman Building ) is the tallest building in Providence, Rhode Island, the highest in the state of Rhode Island, and the 28th highest in New England. Histori

Before the current building was erected, it was the location of the six-storey Butler Exchange building. Located on 55 Exchange Place and built in 1872, the land was supposedly buried by the original heirs of Samuel Butler. The 1872 building became the site of the Rhode Island Commercial School purchased and merged into Bryant & amp; Stratton College in 1916, the ancestor of modern Bryant University. Assigned in 1925 by the Industrial Trust Company (founded in 1886 by Samuel P. Colt), the building is currently built and opened during the period of the inter-war boom as the Industrial Trust Tower in 1927. Designed in the popular Art Deco style of the time, the building was opened for renters on October 1, 1928.

His name became Bank Fleet Tower in 1982 when Industrial Confidence changed its name to Fleet Financial Group in 1982. It will remain Fleet's headquarters until Fleet joined Shawmut National Bank in 1995 and moved to Boston.

In 1998, then FleetBoston Financial, (later current owner) was acquired by Bank of America; and the building is known as Bank of America Building . In 2008, just before a major recession in the United States, the building was purchased by High Rock Development of Massachusetts for $ 33.2 million. Bank of America is the sole tenant in the building, and utilizes about half the building. Bank of America invested $ 7 million in new sprinklers and fire safety systems.

Architecture details

From the steel frame structure enclosed by Indiana's limestone, with the Deer Island granite at its base, the tower was advertised as "Business Building for Business Building." It has six wings coming from the central tower. Floors 5, 12, 14, 17, 18, 26 and 30 each receded to form a distinctive profile building. Rehabilitation effort

The building is relatively unchanged for years. The latest update occurred when the tenants of Bank of America installed a new fire suppression system at a cost of $ 7 million USD around 2007.

In December 2017, Paolino Properties and Gilbane Development announced plans that would involve building demolitions and replacing them with a new 36-story building. This is one of several plans proposed to Hasbro for a new headquarters in downtown Providence.

In popular culture

111 Westminster Street is often referred to as the "Superman Building", because of its resemblance to the Building of the Daily Planet in the Superman comic book.
