Church

English Church

Ettington has had three successive parish churches in different places: the first in Lower Ettington and the second and third in Upper Ettington. In the Middle Ages there was also a chantry chapel in Upper Ettington.

The original parish church of the Holy Trinity was in Lower Ettington. This is a 12th-century Norman building with additional extras. At the beginning of the 13th century, Henry Shirley had an altar to St. Nicholas who was founded in the church. As a result, the church is also known as St. Nicholas. A northern alley with a three-bay arcade was added in the 14th century. The windows on the south side of the nave were replaced in the 17th century.

In the Dissolution of 16th Century Monasteries, chantry in Upper Ettington was dissolved. The chapel was converted into three almshouses, still in use in 1730. The building is now a thatched cottage, Rose Cottage.

In 1794, a parish wedding meeting decided to replace the ancient church at Lower Ettington with a new church in Upper Ettington, which had become a population center even before Evelyn Shirley destroyed the old village. In 1795, the Parliament passed an act which authorized this and in 1798 the new church of St. Thomas of Canterbury ordained. The church of the twelfth century was abandoned, but in 1823 the southern transept was restored as the mortuary chapel for Shirley. The rest of the original church, including the sprawling and distinctive tower, survives as a ruin without a roof. This is a scheduled monument and a registered class I building.

The parish church of St. Thomas is known as the ugliest in Warwickshire. A new Gothic Awakening church to replace it began in 1902 and was completed in 1903. The church of the 18th century was destroyed in 1913, except for the tower and the west wall of the central part of the church, which survives as a chapel of the morgue.

The Holy Trinity parish church tower now has a ring of four bells. Edward Newcombe, who owned a foundry factory in Leicester and Bedford, threw a treble and second bell for the original parish church in 1595. Richard I Purdue, who owns bellfoundries in Somerset in Glastonbury and Stoford, threw the third bell in 1624. John Briant from Hertford gave the tenor bell in 1803, five years after the church of St. Thomas was built.

Holy Trinity parish is part of Stourdene Benefice, which also includes the Alderminster parishes, Butlers Marston, Halford, Newbold on Stour, and Pillerton Hersey.

Society of Friends

The Society of Friends had a member in Ettington in 1664 and its founder George Fox preached at the parish farm of Lambcote in 1678. The Land of Friends grave was founded in 1681. The meeting house was completed in 1684 and is a Grade II * registered building.

Chapel

A Congregation chapel was built in 1804 and enlarged in 1846. It is now a private home. The Methodist Chapel was built in 1836 and is still used for worship in 1949.
