All cars start using digital dashboards beginning 2016. Dashboards only provide information available on manual meter and lap times, but there are plans to work on reading tire pressure and other telemetry for drivers, teams, and fans at home.
On all tracks except Daytona and Talladega:
- The height of the rear spoiler is reduced from 6 inches to 3.5 inches.
- The front edge of the divider is reduced from 2 inches to 0.25 inches.
- The radiator pan width is reduced from 38 inches to 33 inches.
- The rear gear ratios are adjusted to maintain a maximum of 9,000 RPM.
- For tracks shorter than 1.25 miles in length, the third gear ratio is 1.38.
In Daytona and Talladega:
- The machine roller replaces the solid lifter, adding about 10 horsepower to each car.
- The divider plate has an opening reduced from 29/32 inches to 57/64 inches to counter the increase in horsepower.
- Starting in the July Daytona race, every car runs a standard radiator and oil cooler system.
Increased security on all tracks:
- There must be a fire-suppression system activation cable in the aircraft directed to the right-foot dashboard or footboard.
- There should be a double-right NACA push to cool the driver in the path where the side window is used.
- The belt restraint system must meet the specification upgrade.
Other changes:
- All cross paths and wrenches should be painted yellow.
- NASCAR changed the inspection method, reduced the time of inspection before the race but increased the number of time teams to present their cars for pre-qualification checks. In addition, NASCAR uses a new inspection method aided by Microsoft Surface tablets to further improve efficiency.
- Beginning in the Talladega race in May, NASCAR began to reinforce the wheel nuts again, a practice that was discontinued after the 2013 season. The rules now require that all 5 wheel nuts on all four wheels should be "installed in a safe and secure manner." If during post race wheel examination found no wheel nut or lug is not secured, it is an automatic P3 penalty which results in crew head, tire changer, and tire carrier each receiving one race suspension and a fine.. This change comes after mass criticism, especially from owner-driver Tony Stewart, about poor safety practices that result from a lack of law enforcement.
- Starting from the Fall Talladega race, NASCAR allows the team to run additional anti-intrusion panels on the superspeedway race. This component is optional for 2016, required in superspeedway races in 2017, and is required in all races by 2018. This change occurs as a result of a horrific last lap accident investigation suffered by Austin Dillon at Coke Zero 400 in 2015.

Schedule
The last calendar - consisting of 36 races, as well as the exhibition races, the Sprint Unlimited, Can-Am Duel qualifying duel race for the Daytona 500 and Sprint All-Star Race - was released on October 26, 2015. With the Announcement schedule also came NASCAR announcement securing a five- year with each track to continue to host the race for the next five seasons. Major changes from 2015 include:
- Easter holiday week was placed in late March between Fontana and Martinsville, instead of the mid-April break between Martinsville and Texas like in recent years.
- The Coke Zero 400 in Daytona returns to a regular Saturday night date.
- The spring race in Richmond was moved from Saturday night to Sunday afternoon.
- Michigan and Bristol switched August races to avoid scheduling conflicts with the 2016 Summer Olympics held at NBC.
- The third week has been moved to mid-August between Watkins Glen and Bristol, instead of the usual late August-August break between Bristol and Darlington. This has been done to avoid scheduling conflicts with the 2016 Summer Olympics held at NBC. The above-mentioned Olympic conflict forced one race that took place during the game (Watkins Glen) to move to the US, marking the first time the United States has broadcasted the NASCAR Cup race since 1984 UNO Twin 125s. (Another race that took place during the game, at Bristol, was aired on NBCSN.)
- The first race in Dover and Memorial Day Day swap dates, so the last race before the All-Star Race is Dover, not Kansas.
- In the Chase for Championships, three rounds before the last race, originally named Challenger rounds, Contender and Eliminator, just renamed to Round 16, Round 12 and Round 8 respectively.

Kenseth also has a right front tire problem that sent him to the wall and knocked him out of the fight. Kyle Larson had a broken track bar that made it several laps down. Denny Hamlin and Aric Almirola both entered the wall at the end of the race in a separate accident. Edwards will lead most of the laps and win the race, the first of the season. Kevin Harvick won the pole for the All-Star Race after the pitch was set by the owner of the points as qualification was raining. Everyone stopped except Matt Kenseth, who was leading when Jamie McMurray came out with five laps left in the segment and was unable to stop him. He was sentenced to one lap for failing to stop, creating a confusion of judgments that occurred when NASCAR allowed the car to be caught one lap by Kenseth, who is now at the tail end of the lapswain, to complain in front of new leader Carl Edwards. Some of the cars came out of the pit road behind the leaders, one lap down, and initially scored in the main lap. However, the problem was fixed and the cars were sent back. Brad Keselowski headed to the green at the start of the second 50 second lap, which required a green flag pit pit before round 85 (lap 35 of segment 2). Several laps into the segment, warning out for water in turn two, and Kevin Harvick made some pit stops due to what appeared to be a fuel pump problem. When the race resumed, Chase Elliott tried to make the required pit stop, causing Matt Kenseth to slow down and turn into a wall, collecting Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne. Greg Biffle's car was also damaged after cutting off Elliott's right rear. After the restart, others made the green flag stop needed, and Kyle Busch, who took over after the pit stopped, received a penalty that drove and dropped to 13th. Keselowski took over, but lost to Kyle Larson who led from Keselowski, who won the second segment. A random draw of 9, 10, or 11 at the end of the segment determined that the top 11 cars had to complain for four tires. This gave Jimmie Johnson the 12th chance for the last segment, with Kyle Busch lining up next to him. On the restart for the final segment, Kyle Larson takes over from Johnson and begins to withdraw from the field, but is captured by Joey Logano. Larson and Logano ran side by side until both of them made contact sending Larson to the wall. Logano went on to win ahead of team-mate Brad Keselowski.
