Winthrop Williams Aldrich The GBE (November 2, 1885 - February 25, 1974) was an American banker and financier, a descendant of a prominent political family, and the US Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

Initial years

Aldrich was born in Rhode Island in 1885, son of Nelson W. Aldrich. He studied at Harvard University, receiving a bachelor's degree in 1907 and a JD degree in 1910.

During the First World War, Aldrich had built, at his own expense, the patrol boat USS Herreshoff No. 309 hired by Aldrich to the US Navy and patrolling the waters of Rhode Island from November 15, 1917 until December 31, 1918 when it was returned to Aldrich.

Aldrich had been assigned a lieutenant (junior class) at the Naval Reserves and called to active duty on April 8, 1917 and assigned to the Naval Training Station in Newport, Rhode Island. He was transferred to USSÃ, Niagara Ã, (SP-136) in September and was assigned as ship navigator. He was transferred to USSÃ, New Orleans Ã, (CL-22) in June 1918 and served in the convoy. He was promoted to lieutenant on June 1 of the same year and, following a ceasefire, was released from active duty in December.

Careers

Aldrich served as president and chairman of the board of Chase National Bank from 1930 to 1953. He served as commissioner of the New York Yacht Club from 1932 to 1934. During and after World War II, as president of National War Fund Inc., he was a leader in the organization relief and financial assistance to Europe. In 1947 he was invested by King George VI as Knight Cross Knight honor of the British Empire (GBE).

In 1953, he became US Ambassador to England under President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and he remained in London until 1957. He became a member of the board of charitable organizations.

Personal life

In 1916 Aldrich married Harriet Alexander. His sister Abby Aldrich is the wife of John D. Rockefeller, Jr..

He is an amateur musician and an artist whose specialty is the watercolor landscape. As a yachtsman, he is a navigator, under the captain of Harold S. Vanderbilt, of the American J-1000 Cup, the Enterprise Class defender.

He built a 40-room manor on 108 acres in Brookville on Long Island.

Awards

In 1947, he was appointed the Great Knights of the Great Kingdom of England by King George VI. This gives him the right to use GBE's postnominal letter, but not for the prenominal title "Sir" because he is not an English subject.

He is a member of the exclusive and prestigious Pilgrim Community.
