William Chase Richardson (born May 11, 1940) received a Bachelor of Arts from Trinity College (Connecticut) and a Master's in Business Administration (1964) and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1971).

Dr Richardson was previously a graduate dean and vice rector for research at the University of Washington (1981-1984), executive vice president and provost at Pennsylvania State University (1984-1990), and holds various positions at the University of Chicago. He later became president of Johns Hopkins University (1990-1995). Dr. Richardson devotes his academic career to researching financing and health care organizations in the US.

While at Johns Hopkins, Richardson made efforts to update the curriculum, diversify student bodies and faculty, enhance cooperation between academic divisions, and secure school financial position. Registration increased in 1995 to a record of 16,330 and a new capital campaign was launched, aiming to raise $ 900 million. African-American and Hispanic registration has doubled in five years as president.

Dr Richardson left academics to head the Kellogg Foundation (1995-2005) and became chairman and deputy commissioner of The Kellogg Foundation Trust (1996-2007). Dr. Richardson also served on the board of Kellogg Company (1996-2007), Bank of New York (1998-2007), Exelon Corporation (2005-2016), CSX Corporation (1992-2008), and Mercantile Bankshares. He succeeded at the Kellogg Foundation in January 2006 by Sterling Speirn.

He was elected as a member of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences in 1981. He is best known for his role as chairman of a breakthrough report on medical errors ("For Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System") and the following report on the quality of health care in America ("Crossing the Quality Chasm: New Health System for the 21st Century"). He won the David Rall Prize in 2007. (David Rall's Medal was awarded to members of the Institute of Medicine who have shown special leadership differentiated as head of the research committee or other such activities in a highly exemplary manner, demonstrating commitment far above and beyond expectations the usual from the committee chair.)
