History
In 1995 Deutsche Telekom renamed the service Bildschirmtext (BTX) as "T-Online". In Spring 2000, T-Online became the first major German ISP to offer an average tariff package for consumers. This is important because local phone calls in Germany, including dialup access to ISPs, are not offered at the average price per call (i.e., unlimited). Average tariff services are also offered to customers with ISDN connections for the same price as analog services. In Spring 2001, T-Online announced the demise of fixed tariff dial-up plans but offered a fixed tariff DSL plan in place.
Deutsche Telekom (T-Online) was the Internet Service Provider (ISP) monopolist for the German Internet until privatization in 1995, and the dominant ISP thereafter. Until the 21st century, Deutsche Telekom controls almost all Internet access by individuals and small businesses in Germany.
