Delta Dental is the largest dental plan system in the United States. Delta Dental Insurance Association consists of 39 independent Dental Delta companies operating in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. These member companies provide coverage to 68 million people, enrolled in over 120,000 groups. While many companies are members of the Delta Dental and Delta Dental Plans Association (DDPA) are nonprofit organizations, some member companies have a nonprofit segment.

History
The Gear Delta roots go back to 1954 with the establishment of a dental service company in California, Oregon and Washington, created by dentists who recognize the need to improve access to oral health care. Led by the Washington Dental Service (WDS), Delta Dental began by providing an organized dental benefit program for unions. WDS underwent a rebranding campaign in 2013 and now runs under the name Delta Dental of Washington.
The Delta Dental Plans Association (DDPA) was formed in 1966 to bring together local service organizations and coordinate dental benefits programs for customers with employees in many states. A year later, the first multi-state program was sold by WDS to the International Association of Machinists. WDS hands over the administration to applicants in other countries to other Delta Gear member companies and is contracted with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association for administration in the state without Delta Dental affiliated organizations.
Coverage was provided in this way until the late 1980s when Delta Dental of California won a tender for the Office of Civil Health and Medical Program of the Uniform Program (OCHAMPUS). Delta Gigi member companies agree to share their inventory data so that the administration of this enormous account can be centered, with Delta Dental of California sharing revenue and administrative risks. The OCHAMPUS program leads to the creation of the National Provider File (NPF), made available to commercial accounts in 1990 through Delta USA - providing Delta Dental coverage for organizations with employees and customers located in several states.
In 2017, Delta Dental - through legal representative Paul Georgeson of McDonald Carano - urged the Nevada Supervisory Board to suspend approval of the winning bidder contract, indicating that they will file a lawsuit in the district court to block the contract and will seek orders. Georgeson said that his client Delta Dental was not treated fairly and fairly during the application process and review of contract offerings; that the original request for the proposal was withdrawn after Delta Dental was awarded a contract back in January 2017. The reason given was that a key component change needed to be made for the proposed contract but Georgeson of Delta told the Examining Board that the actual change was nominal.

If an individual has dental insurance through their employer, a Delta Dental member company in the state of their headquarters will usually handle the coverage. Delta Individual Dental Insurance is available in several countries either through a state or state member company or a federal health care center. Other individual dental insurance options are available through special groups such as AARP and retired military, federal workers and veterans groups.
