The Chase Family was an American family involved in politics in the 19th century. Coming from Chesham, England, the brothers of Aquila Chase II and Thomas Chase left for New England in 1636, shortly after the pilgrims. Most prominent family members are descended from Aquila Chase, whose sons live in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, members of the Chase family, previously rich but not very influential, began to engage in law, politics, and religion. Lawyers such as Scott Lord (whose mother is a Chase) and Salmon Portland Chase, Chairman of the Justice of the United States, are produced. Chase politicians include Dudley Chase, Champion S. Chase, Dudley Chase Denison, and Margaret Chase Smith. Although Chase politicians are perhaps best known, the family produced several religious figures as well, including Episcopal bishops and educators Philander Chase and Presbyterian theologian John Chase Lord, who were at the forefront of their respective churches in their prime.
