Initial career
Prior to joining Visa in November 2012, Scharf is the CEO of Retail Financial Services for JPMorgan Chase & amp; Co for nine years from July 2004 to June 2011. He is also managing director of One Equity Partners, a private investment arm of JPMorgan. He is CEO and CFO at Bank One Corp before working at JPMorgan Chase & amp; Co. from 2000 to 2002. From 1999 to 2000, he was a CFO of the Global Corporate and Investment Bank division at Citigroup, Inc. From 1995 to 1999 he was CFO at Salomon Smith Barney. He began his career as Dimon's assistant in Commercial Loans in the late 1980s.

Scharf, at the age of 48, took over as CEO of the company in November 2012, replacing Joseph Saunders. He was also appointed as a board member after increasing the size of the board to eleven members out of ten. It has over 25 years of financial services, payment systems, and leadership experience. He is also Visa's director and his predecessor, Visa USA, from 2003 to 2011. Visa payment technology company, Inc. (V) discloses in the rules applicable on Friday that Chief Executive Officer Charles Scharf received total compensation in 2013 of $ 24.20 million, including basic salary, grants and stock incentives in 2013.
Scharf earned praise from analysts and insiders for breaking tradition. He has made Visa, No. 238 at Fortune 500 with revenues of $ 11.8 billion, more open to merchants and technological innovation. He oversees the network with 2.2 billion cards received by 36 million merchants globally. And he has done it with a little flash: He mostly avoids the press; sources describe it as "all business."
Nonprofit leadership
Scharf is on the board for Johns Hopkins University and he is on the board of directors for the Financial Services Round Table.
On February 26, 2014, President Barack Obama announced his intention to nominate individuals for important positions among which was Charles W. Scharf, appointed Member, Presidential Advisory Council for Financial Capacity for Young Americans.
He is currently at the Executive Board for UCSF Health and Board of Directors for Microsoft Corp.
On October 17, 2016, Scharf advised the Board of Directors that he could no longer spend enough time in San Francisco "to do the job effectively". He announced that he would resign on 1 December.
